  • There will be a test on thematic elements, characterization, setting, plot, and previously learned literary elements that will be pulled from a mixture of all of the summer reading during the first week of school.
  • Additionally, at the end of the nine weeks, students will write a critical 3-5 page essay on one of the summer reading selections.
  • Throughout the year these selections will be connected thematically and stylistically to other novels in the curriculum; therefore, each piece of literature should be read conscientiously and thoroughly before the first day of school.
  • It is advisable to take notes or keep a reading journal that can be used to study
for the test, participate in class discussions, and refer to for critical writing. Notes
will not be taken for a grade or for bonus points; they are for preparation
purposes only.
